No New Posts   Architects Experience Rise in New Contracts

January 27, 2010

US architects reported a rise in the number of new design contracts in October after more than a year of struggling. Not since August 2008, says the American Institute of Architects, has the industry seen this level of business. New architectural contracts are generally used as an indicator of future new construction starts because there is typically a 9 to 12 month gap between the architect being hired and construction to begin.

The AIA report showed that new work for architects climbed sharply in September, though is still well below highs set in the middle part of the decade. Many believe that the industry is close to a bottom and should begin growing in the next quarter, and that a substantial spurt in construction is only months away.

Some architects are still skeptical. One in Southern California says that he and his colleagues in that area have not seen evidence of a rise in billings, noting that the majority of the new contracts are for institutions like schools and government buildings. The next largest increase in billings was for apartment buildings, followed by commercial layouts like shopping malls.

No New Posts   San Diego Home Values Up and Down

October 28, 2009

Home values in San Diego rose more than 1.5% from July to August.  This was a drop compared to June to July, where the increase was 2.5%.  The San Diego real estate market has been hit hard with declining home values, with values dropping over twenty percent in some cases.  Compared to a year ago, San Diego home prices dropped nearly nine percent.

Highlighting an even more drastic change, home values are down almost forty percent when compared with numbers from 2005.

S&P economist David Blitzer stated that declining home values are not only improving on a national scale, but California is also seeing significant improvements.  Some areas throughout the United States have already hit home values reminiscent of 2003 numbers, however, Blizter did say that it make take half a decade for Southern California home values to fully recover.

No New Posts   San Diego and Los Angeles Home Prices UP!!

October 27, 2009

As I have reported in the past, the San Diego real estate market has been showing signs of recovery for some time now.  It was one of the first markets to be affected by the housing crisis, so it only makes sense that it would lead the way in its recovery.  The latest news shows that both Los Angeles and San Diego home prices rose over one percent compared to the previous month.
