Cee Lo Green sparked a controversy Saturday night when he covered the timeless John Lennon classic, "Imagine." Green did a respectable job on the song, and the Times Square crowd reacted favorably, but observers would later express outrage at the singer's changing of a lyric in the song. A line in the song as Lennon wrote it goes "and no religion too," which Green altered to "all religion is true."
Hundreds of Lennon fans took to the Web Sunday and Monday to criticize Green for the change, and accusing the former member of Gnarls Barkley of rining the classic anthem and altering its meaning. Green replied on Twitter with the following post:
"Yo I meant no disrespect by changing the lyric guys!" he wrote on the micro-blogging site. "I was trying to say a world were u could believe what u wanted that's all." Green apparently had a change of heart about the apology later in the day, however, as he pulled the apology and posted a Happy New Year message.
