Legendary Jazz man Sam Rivers passed away on Monday following a brief battle with pneumonia. He was 88. Through a career that spanned several decades, the saxophonist performed and recorded with a number of jazz greats, including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday and others. He also performed with bands of his own, releasing a number of albums on the Blue Note Records label. In addition to tenor and soprano sax, Rivers also played flute and piano in addition to serving as a composer and arranger.
