Katy Perry has been selected as MTVs first ever Artist of the Year, as she enjoyed tremendous success in 2011, becoming just the second artist ever to record five No. 1 hit songs from a single album.  In the past, MTV's various arms compiled their own Best of lists, but the network has decided this year to create a franchise that combined these acknowledgements into one.  A panel of experts has been debating the nods for several weeks, and those discussions featured prominently in the network's television programming last week.  The panel also named Adele's hit song, "Rolling in the Deep," as the top song of 2011.
