Legendary country singer Billie Jo Spears, best known for the 1975 hit "Blanket on the Ground," passed away after a long battle with cancer Wednesday. Depending on who you believe, she was either 73 or 74 years old. Born and raised in Beaumont, Texas, Spears made her first record, "Too Old for Toys, Too Young for Boys," while she was just a child.
The singer made a move to Nashville in 1964, signing with United Artists Records just months after she arrived. Failing to produce any hits, she moved to Capitol Records by the end of the 60s and scored her first hit, 1969's "Mr. Walker, It's All Over." The early 70s did not bring much success for Spears, so she returned to United Artists in 1975 and shortly after released "Blanket on the Ground," the biggest hit of her career.
