"Drift Away" Songwriter Dobie Gray Dead at 71

Dobie Gray, the soul singer best known for his 1973 hit "Drift Away," passed away Wednesday at the age of 71.  Gray was born in 1940 to a family of sharecroppers in Simonton, Texas, and moved West to California in the early 60s to pursue a music career.  His first big hit came in 1965 with "The In-Crowd," but he is best known for the 1973 single, "Drift Away," which has been covered by numerous artists including Rod Stewart, Waylon Jennings and Uncle Cracker.  Gray also sang the last verse on Uncle Cracker's cover of the song in 2003.
