Popular 80s R&B singer El Debarge has reportedly checked himself into a rehabilitation center, placing his recent comeback attempt on hold as the 49 year-old attempts to recover from years of substance abuse. "I hate to disappoint my fans but it is necessary for me to take the time to work on me so that I may continue to share my music and my story with everyone," said the singer in a statement. "I thank everyone in advance for their prayers and well wishes and hope that you will respect my privacy during this time."
El Debarge released a fifth album, "Second Chance," last November, 16 years after the release of his fourth. The singer has had his share of criminal woes in the past, including a two-year prison stay for a 2008 drug possession charge.
El Debarge was scheduled to begin a US tour with Kem and Ledisi this Thursday, but has backed out of all those dates. Musiq Soulchild has been named as a replacement act for the tour.
