Gregg Allman, the legendary co-founder of the Allman Brothers Band, underwent a liver transplant yesterday forcing the group to suspend tour plans including a scheduled appearance at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Festival Saturday in Chicago, Illinois. Allman Bros. guitarist Derek Trucks and his wife Susan Tedeschi will fill in at Crossroads.
Gregg, who is 62, was diagnosed with hepatitis C back in 2007 and has been battling with the disease ever since. After the surgery was completed at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida Allman released a statement: "I feel pretty good, considering everything that's happened. Everybody involved here, my doctors and nurses in the hospital and all the Allman Brothers fans, they've just all been great...All I can say is 'thanks.'
Doctors have yet to offer details on Allman's long-term prognosis and it is currently unknown when the band will be able to resume playing live.
