The European nation of France was placed under martial law Friday, and its borders closed, after a series of terrorist attacks including the capture of scores of hostages at a concert featuring the Eagles of Death Metal at Le Bataclan in Paris. According to multiple reports, 6-8 gunmen are holding an estimated 100 hostages inside the venue. CNN reported that some of the hostages were posting messages on Twitter, asking police to raid the venue, even as screams and gunfire were still being heard inside. CNN also spoke to a witness who claimed seeing around 20 people shot inside Le Bataclan. Members of the Eagles of Death Metal had managed to escape the venue when the terrorists showed up; and all were safe according to French media, including founder and Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, who did not take part in the band's European tour.
In addition to Friday's attack on the Eagles of Death Metal concert, there were several other attacks throughout Paris on Friday. Shootings were reported at three separate locations around the city, and three explosions rocked the Stade de France athletic arena while a soccer friendly match was going on between France and Germany. French President Francois Hollande was reportedly in attendance at the match, but was rushed to safety immediately after the first explosion. Reports about casualties from the terrorist attacks was varied, with the lowest number being reported at 35 dead. So far, authorities have not directly linked all of Friday's attacks, but believe all of them to be terrorist-related. The terrorist group ISIS lauded the attacks on Twitter after they began, but stopped short of claiming responsibility.
