As the record industry continues to plunge into the abyss, another record label is showing signs of weakness. Roadrunner Records has cut 30+ jobs and is said to be closing its Dutch, UK and Canada offices. In addition, founder / CEO Cees Wessels has stepped down. Roadrunner UK publicist Kirsten Sprinks commented: 'It's true we're all out of a job. Its safe to say its a truly horrible day. We're a little family really.'
Roadrunner staff in the United States sees 16 staffers losing their job, but will continue to operate as a standalone frontline label.
Just 17 months ago Warner Brothers stepped in and bought the label, reportedly because they wanted Roadrunner artist Nickleback. But even Nickleback has not been immune to the music sales slump. The label is still home to big name hard rock acts like Rush, Queensryche, Megadeth and Ratt.
