Slash: 'Alcohol Was Harder To Give Up Than Heroin'

In the upcoming edition of Classic Rock magazine, Slash opens up about his addictions and talks about his new album Apocalyptic Love.   In 1992, while on tour with Guns n Roses, the guitarist died (his heart stopped for 8 minutes), from a heroin, crack and cocaine overdose but says that the drugs were easier to kick than alcohol.

I come from, not an alcoholic background, but my dad was a drinker and people in my family were drinkers, and being born in England that was just part of pub culture, Slash said. So that was definitely the hardest. And next was smoking.

Heroin was physically hard, but I was always in and out of that. The whole process of getting off that stuff was a very long and tedious process, and it got to the point where I was really sick and tired of it, to the point where it didnt interest me any more.

But I also know that if I thought I could casually have a drink or casually do whatever, that would leave that door open. I know how that works, because Ive done it before, so I just abstain from it altogether.

I had dinner once with [actor] Ewan McGregor and Trainspotting was all we talked about. Thats one of the iconic drug movies. Theres nothing that beats fucking dope. Especially when youre first doing it. Thats what junkies are chasing their entire lives, that first buzz.

The brand new issue of Classic Rock, with Slash on the cover, goes on sale next Wednesday (April 25).
