Mission to Lars, a real-life documentary about a Metallica fan suffering from a form of autism, called Fragile X Syndrome, will come to select UK cinemas this summer. The documentary tells the story of Tom Spicer and his quest to me his hero, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. It begins with his sister, Kate, and his brother, William, breaking Tom out of his care-facility and going on a journey which takes them to Los Angeles, Vegas and beyond.
Sister Kate commented: We had this fantasy of hitting the road with Tom and recreating some of the magic of our teenage years cruising around in £100 cars, eating Burger King and listening to heavy metal on the tape deck.....We thought it would be fun, bonding. We wanted to do something good for our brother. We were also sick of him endlessly asking [if he could meet Lars].
The hopeful journey soon becomes a nightmare as Tom's disabilities, family dysfunction, and Metallica's labyrinth world threaten to thwart the mission.
