The Country Music Hall of Fame unveiled the 2012 class of inductees at a press conference Tuesday, which includes legendary singer Garth Brooks as well as Connie Smith and keyboardist Hargus "Pig" Robbins. Brooks' popularity went beyond the confines of country audiences, becoming a mainstream success with more than 128 million albums sold over a 15 year career.
Robbins has been a highly-touted session player for more than 50 years, appearing on albums from George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Alan Jackson, Merle Haggard, and many others. Robbins even appeared on several Bob Dylan records, and released 8 studio albums of his own during the 60s and 70s.
Connie Smith was part of a movement of female singers that broke through in the late 60s when country music was still dominated by men. In addition to being cited by numerous artists as a major influence, Smith's 1964 single "Once a Day" still holds the record for most consecutive weeks at No. 1 on Billboards Hot Country Songs chart. SMith is married to fellow country legend Marty Stuart.
