Over the past few years, a number of musicians have taken offense to the use of their music by Republican candidates running for office. In 2008, for example, singer Jackson Brown filed a lawsuit against John McCain, who had used Brown's "Running On Empty" during his campaign for President. A couple months later, former Eagle Don Henley sued California Senator hopeful Chuck DeVore over his use of Henley's song "Boys of Summer."
On Monday, Newt Gingrich was named in a lawsuit over his use of the song "Eye of the Tiger." The suit was filed in an Illinois federal court on behalf of Rude Music Inc., a label owned by Frank Sullivan, who co-wrote the song. According to the complaint, Gingrich's campaign has been using the song, originally performed by Survivor, at campaign rallies and other events without obtaining permission from Sullivan, who owns the rights to the song. The suit is asking for an injunction against the campaign's future use of the song on the grounds that it violates the copyright.
