Doo-wop legend Fred Milano, who helped make Dion & the Belmonts a household name during the 60s, passed away following a brief battle with lung cancer in a New York hospital last weekend. He was 72 years old. Milano and three childhood friends formed the Belmonts in the mid-1950s, after a street running through their neighborhood, and changed the name to Dion & the Belmonts when Dion DeMucci joined them in 1958. While DeMucci left the band in 1960, the rest of the group has performed occasionally ever since. Milano is survived by his wife Lynn, two children and ten grandchildren.
