Attorneys for legendary reggae star Buju Banton have filed an appeal of the singer's February conviction on federal drug charges. The lawyers claim that there was insufficient evidence to support prosecutors' claim that Banton was involved in a cocaine-trafficking conspiracy, and also that the international star was relentlessly pursued by a federal informant who was seeking a $50,000 payday from the government, effectively resulting in entrapment.
Banton, real name Mark Myrie, was convicted of conspiracy and cocaine trafficking charges in February and is serving a 10-year sentence on those charges. A related gun charge was thrown out. It will likely be months before Banton's appeal is heard by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta.
