Lil' Wayne's new album, "Tha Carter IV," should be getting ready to post the biggest week of sales of any album of 2011 if the progrnosticators are right. And if Lady Gaga hadn't pimped out "Born this Way" for 99 cents to Amazon downloaders, it probably would be. Notable industry prognosticators are expecting Wayne's ninth full set to sell between 700,000 and 850,000 copies, which would make it second only to Gaga's latest, which was made available to download on Amazon for 99 cents in its first day of release.
The 99-cent promotion attracted so many buyers that the traffic shut down Amazon's servers. To make it up to its customers who weren't able to make the purchase, Amazon extended the sale for a day. Of the 1.1 million albums sold in the album's first week, 440,000 were sold as downloads through Amazon. Take those out, the album sells 660,000 copies.
