Facundo Cabral, one of the most poular Latin folk singers in the world, was gunned down over the weekend in Guatemala. He was 74 years old. According to reports, Cabral was on his way to the airport at 5:20 AM Saturday morning when three cars blocked the vehicle he was in and opened fire, killing the singer. Authorities said that the bullets were intended for Nicaraguan promoter, Henry Farinas, who was driving the vehicle and sustained injuries.
Cabral rose to popularity in the early 70s, as an influential member of a group of Latin singers who wrote politically charged folk songs that really hit home with an audience struggling with political oppression and revolutions across Latin America.
