Rapper Missy Elliot revealed this week that she has been suffering from Graves' Disease, an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid gland, since 2008. Elliot revealed her medical problem to People magazine this week, describing sypmtoms like mood swings and rapid weight loss that affect her without warning.
"I was [driving and] trying to put my foot on the brake, but my leg was jumping. I couldn't keep the brake down and almost crashed," Elliott said. "I couldn't write because my nervous system was so bad, I couldn't even use a pen."
The rapper has reportedly been undergoing radiation treatment and a vigorous excercise routine, which has helped to improve her condition. "I'm 30 pounds lighter because I've been exercising." Elliott continues. "My thyroid is functioning, so I haven't had to take medication in about nine months. [But] you live with it for the rest of your life."
Elliot will be featured on an upcoming episode of VH1s "Behind the Music," on which she will discuss the disease, her struggles with her weight, and being the victim of sexual abuse as a child. Missy's "Behind the Music" will air on Wendesday June 29th at 10 PM ET.
