The world of heavy metal and indeed the entire music industry mourns the passing of a legend today. Ronald James Padavona, better known as Ronnie James Dio, the seminal frontman for Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Dio, Elf, and Heaven & Hell succumbed to cancer yesterday morning at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston. Dio was 67. Ronnie's wife and manager Wendy posted the following message on Dio's official website:

"Today my heart is broken. Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m....Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever."

Dio's 53 year career was one of the most accomplished, influential, and important in history. Despite only standing five-foot-two, Dio possessed one of the most powerful metal voices ever. Many of the best metal songs of all time were written by him. Dio truly was the King of Rock and Roll. He will be sorely missed by fans of heavy metal everywhere.

Rest in peace, Ronnie; now the dancer bleeds for you.
