Rhino Records announced plans to release a 6-disc collection of the last four Doors performances in New York City. The band played 2 gigs apiece on January 17th and 18th, 1970 at the Felt Forum, now known as the WaMu Theatre. The collection, titled "Live in New York", will feature 90 songs, nearly a third of which have never been released. After they played Madison Square Garden in '69, the band opted for the more intimate setting of the Felt Forum when they returned to support "Morrison Hotel". "It was more intimate, and you could feel the audience more," drummer John Densmore said in a statement. "There was more interaction, and the acoustics were much better, because it was designed for music."
Doors Keyboard player Ray Manzarek said that the shows were like a return to the band's early, club days in LA. "We used to do four sets a night at the London Fog, and we only had a small block of songs written up to that time. So we would do other people's material. And in New York, it was like the same thing," Manzarek said. "We've got four shows to play here, two sets tonight, two sets tomorrow night. Let's play whatever we want! Let's just go!"
"Live in New York" is scheduled for release November 10th. In addition, Rhino will be re-releasing all of the Morrison era Doors albums on 180 gram vinyl on September 15th.
