Former Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell was found dead in a hotel room yesterday morning. Mitchell had just competed a tour (The Experience Hendrix tour), which featured past bandmate Billy Cox as well as, several other "notable musicians". The drummer had decided to stay in the city of Portland, OR after the tour ended, stating that he wanted to spend some time in the city before returning to his home in England. Reports are now stating that he more than likely died of natural causes.
Experience Hendrix CEO Janie Hendrix stated, "We're all devastated to hear of Mitch's passing,.....He was a wonderful man, a brilliant musician and a true friend. His role in shaping the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cannot be underestimated."
Mitch Mitchell joined up with Hendrix in '66 and played with the guitar great until '69, when Hendrix decided to break up the band and form Band of Gypsys. Mitchell did play with Hendrix at his famous Woodstock performance and later did a brief reunion in '70 with Hendrix. However, the reunion was cut short when Hendrix died on September 18th 1970.
