THERES SOME GREAT CANADIAN TALENT OUT THERE! Over the past several months of playing weve come across some great opening acts. A lot of these artists have their own indie CDs, and some of them are quite good. I was cleaning up the Helix offices here at Planet Helix this morning, and came across a couple, so I popped them in the CD player and gave them a listen.
Helix started out in much the same way, and was one of the first bands in the world to release an indie album. It was back in 1977 with the H&S release (*Helix & Seip) Breaking Loose, and the follow-up 1981 release White Lace & Black Leather. These two pieces of vinyl eventually led to our signing with Capitol/E.M.I. U.S. in 1983.
Here are a couple of bands and their respective CDs that I think you should check out if you get the chance:
SKARD - ON THE HIGHWAY: These guys backed us up in Hope, B.C. and had a lot of their own fans show up to stuff the Hope Recreation Center. Well written songs and good production. www.skard.ca
STEVE HILL - DEVIL AT MY HEELS: Steve backed us up at Healeys in Toronto the night before Jeff died. It was a downer moment on an otherwise great night. This CD rocks out in Stevie Ray tradition, and Steve shows off his great playing ability. Youre gonna see/hear a lot more of this guy in the future. www.stevehillmusic.com/guitarhero.htm
WARMACHINE - THE BEGINNING OF THE END: These guys backed us up last time we were at R&R Heavens. Unfortunately I missed the band, but everyone was raving about how good they were. www.warmachine.com
